When Poker Invented – What Happened?

When was poker invented? This is a question that has baffled people for years. The earliest evidence of a game being played using chairs is dated from approximately 500 B.C. With the advent of democracy, all of the world’s ancient games were replaced by freer games, and one of these was poker. Poker began as an informal pastime, and while it was a very popular game in ancient societies around the world, it was much looked down upon by the Roman authorities because it was deemed to be a game that could encourage lawlessness. It was not very long before it became illegal altogether.

Today, poker is a very popular card game: played in casinos all over the world and has developed into a very sophisticated and refined game. Poker has evolved from being just a game of chance into a game where players are using strategy to try to make the other person lose. Although there are many different styles of poker that players can play, they all basically use seven ‘hand’ cards, referred to as the ‘card deck’, which contain a single queen, King, Jack, seven cards called the ‘flush’, and twenty-four secondary cards. The cards are used in a round robin fashion, with each player getting four turns, and the player with the strongest five cards at the end wins. When was poker invented?

There are two theories on when was poker invented: One theory states that it was invented during the Middle Ages by aristocratic families as a way of gambling. By using tricks and strategies, these members of these families would bet large sums of money on games like quinsies or spades. The cards, which were originally simple and made out of wood, took on many different designs. Eventually, the cards began to be made out of glass, ivory, leather, wood, plastic, and even paper.

Another theory: on when was poker invented states that it was called poker, in Ireland, Scotland, and England during the Golden Age of Piracy when the game was popular among goldsmiths and merchants. This is thought to be the origin of the ‘household card deck’, which is what we know today. This would make the game very difficult for the average person to play because the game was only played among the upper class.
